GUJARAT  POLLUTION  CONTROL  BOARD (G. P. C. B.)

The Government of Gujarat constituted the Gujarat Pollution Control Board with view to protect and control the environment and water pollution in the state of Gujarat (Where Alang Ship Recycling Yards are also situated) having head office at Paryavaran Bhavan, Sector 10-A, Gandhinagar- 382 010  Gujarat, India

VISION OF GPCB

GPCB aims at developing all round capabilities to protect the environment, water and to control Hazardous Waste Import, Storage, Management and Handling.

OBJECTIVES 

The major objectives of the Board are centered around the Pollution Control and protection of environmental quality by effective implementation of the laws to control of pollution at source to the maximum extent possible with due regard to technological achievements and economic viability. This objective is being fulfilled through laying down the disposal standards as well as gaseous emission standards. Identifications of sites, and development of procedures, and methods, for the disposal of hazardous wastes. Maximization of re-use and re-cycle of water (after treatment) for economizing and saving on use of water. To encourage, Common Effluent- Treatment, Stabilization and Disposal Facilities. To create environment awareness with close co-ordination with Education Institutes, Industrial Associations, Government Organization, N.G.O. etc.

FUNCTION

The functions of the Board are to enforce the provisions of Acts, Rules and Directives issued by the Authorities from time to time. Board also issue directives for pollution control measures, to the polluting units.  Promotion of Cleanliness, Prevention control and abatement of Air Pollution and improvement in the ambient air quality. Advising the State Government on any matter concerning prevention and control of water and air pollution. Monitoring of Rivers. Collection of statistical data relating to Air and Water pollution.

PRIORITIES

The areas deserving priorities to act are as under:
»  Identification of locations in states having severe pollution problems and to minimize it.
Identification and development of sites for disposal of hazardous wastes.
»  Identification of major air polluting units/agencies and enforcement of Air Act to control Air Emissions.
»  Proper selection of sites for new industrial projects.
»  Common facilities for collection, treatment and disposal of effluent in the small units situated in proximity.
»  Identification, development and adoption of clean production technologies where able applicable.
»  Minimizing discharge of effluent in to streams and water bodies and promotion of recycling to reuse treated water for irrigation and development of green belts.
